Nvidia aquires SchedMD – developer of Slurm HPC scheduling software (www.heise.de)

Nvidia has announced its acquisition of SchedMD, the developer behind Slurm, a leading open-source workload management system used in high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI). With this strategic move, Nvidia aims to bolster its open-source software ecosystem and propel AI innovations for researchers and developers. The company emphasized its commitment to continue developing Slurm as vendor-neutral software, without disclosing the financial details of the deal. Slurm is instrumental in managing complex computational tasks across supercomputing clusters, essential for efficient resource utilization as HPC and AI workloads grow in scale and complexity. Currently implemented in over half of the Top-10 and Top-100 supercomputers listed by Top500, Slurm provides critical infrastructure for AI applications, facilitating model training and inference for foundation models. As CEO Danny Auble noted, this collaboration with Nvidia is set to enhance Slurm's capabilities, allowing it to meet the evolving challenges in AI and supercomputing while remaining accessible to developers and businesses alike.
