Individual and Team Drivers of Developer GenAI Tool Use (arxiv.org)

A recent study titled "Maybe We Need Some More Examples" sheds light on the uneven adoption of generative AI tools among software developers, highlighting critical drivers of this disparity. Through paired interviews with 54 developers from 27 teams, researchers found that tool usage varies significantly based on how developers perceive these tools—as collaborators or mere features—and their individual engagement styles, ranging from experimental to conservative. Furthermore, developers' responses to challenges, whether they exhibit adaptive persistence or quick abandonment, further influence their usage patterns. This study is significant for the AI/ML community, as it reveals the complexities behind tool adoption that go beyond mere technological capabilities. The findings suggest that organizations may be creating a "Productivity Pressure Paradox" by expecting rapid gains in efficiency without providing adequate learning support for developers. This insight underscores the necessity for companies to foster a supportive environment that encourages experimentation and resilience, ultimately enhancing the productivity benefits that generative AI tools can offer.
