The latest McKinsey Global Survey on the State of AI reveals that while nearly 88% of organizations are using AI in some capacity, most remain in the experimental or pilot stages, with only a third scaling AI technologies across their enterprises. A significant 62% of respondents are exploring AI agents, which facilitate more intricate workflows and decision-making. Notably, high-performing companies that focus on using AI for growth and innovation report greater success compared to those concentrating solely on cost efficiency. The survey highlights that these companies are also more likely to redesign workflows, invest in AI capabilities, and have strong leadership commitment towards their AI initiatives. Although respondents acknowledge positive impacts on innovation and a handful of use-case-specific cost benefits, only 39% report measurable effects on EBIT at the enterprise level. Opinions regarding AI’s impact on workforce size vary, with most expecting little change but a notable share foreseeing reductions. Overall, while AI adoption continues to grow, the journey towards tangible, enterprise-wide benefits remains uneven, emphasizing the need for organizations to integrate AI more deeply into their operations to fully realize its potential.
