TMLR Beyond PDF:Journal of Machine Learning Research Now Accept HTML Submissions (tmlr-beyond-pdf.org)

The Transactions on Machine Learning Research (TMLR) has launched "Beyond PDF," a new submission format that accepts Markdown/HTML pageless, webpage-style papers supporting interactive figures, videos, and other rich media. Inspired by interactive publication formats like Distill.pub and ICLR blogposts, Beyond PDF keeps the same double-blind peer-review workflow by routing submissions through OpenReview. Authors choose the new “Beyond PDF submission (pageless, webpage-style content)” type, upload a zipped folder of their files (an author kit is provided), and submissions are automatically rendered on the TMLR Beyond PDF site under_review. This change is significant because it enables more expressive, reproducible and pedagogically rich papers—think embeddable visualizations, runnable demos, and clearer data/experiment presentations—without sacrificing established review rigor. For reviewers and tooling, it implies handling web-native artifacts and ensuring archival and citation practices for non-PDF outputs. The launch involved collaboration with the OpenReview team and a recommended committee, and the site and workflow were implemented by TMLR managing editor Paul Vicol. Expect this format to accelerate richer experimental storytelling in ML research while prompting community attention to standards for artifact packaging, long-term hosting, and review practices for interactive content.
