OpenAI and PayPal Team Up to Power Checkout and Agentic Commerce in ChatGPT (newsroom.paypal-corp.com)

OpenAI and PayPal announced a partnership to bring PayPal payments into ChatGPT by adopting the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP). Millions of ChatGPT users will be able to check out instantly with PayPal via OpenAI Instant Checkout; PayPal will also handle card processing through OpenAI’s delegated payments API. Starting in 2026, PayPal’s ACP server will surface product catalogs from tens of millions of merchants (small businesses to major brands) into ChatGPT without per-merchant integrations, handling merchant routing, payment validation, orchestration, and offering PayPal wallet options, buyer/seller protections and post-purchase services. For the AI/ML community this is a major step toward real-world “agentic commerce” where autonomous agents can discover products and complete transactions end-to-end. Technically notable elements include ACP as a standardized agent–merchant layer, delegated payments APIs for secure card flows, and PayPal’s ACP server as a scalable, compliant gateway—reducing integration friction at massive scale. Implications: developers can build commerce-enabled agents and search/rec recommendation pipelines with direct transaction capability, but must address payment security, privacy, compliance, auditability and alignment of agent behavior when real money is involved. PayPal is also expanding internal use of OpenAI (ChatGPT Enterprise, Codex, APIs), signaling broader enterprise adoption and faster iteration on commerce-aware AI features.
