Expense platform AppZen found AI-crafted receipts made up 14% of fraudulent documents in September 2025—up from 0% in 2024—while fintech Ramp says it flagged over $1 million in suspicious invoices in the past 90 days. Vendors such as SAP Concur warn the fakes are so convincing that visual inspection is unreliable: “do not trust your eyes,” says a company executive. The trend mirrors broader abuses of image, video and document generators and signals a fast-growing attack surface for corporate finance teams. Technically, receipts are easy targets for generative models because they’re structured, low-variance documents; attackers can synthesize realistic line items, logos and layouts and strip metadata to evade basic forensic checks. That makes traditional manual review ineffective and forces businesses toward automated detection, metadata scanning, cryptographic verification of originals, stricter vendor/payment workflows, or anchored proofs (e.g., signed digital receipts or API-driven supplier invoicing).
