Introducing Claude Skills (www.anthropic.com)

Anthropic announced “Skills,” a portable folder format that packages instructions, scripts, and resources so Claude can load specialized expertise on demand. Skills are composable, efficient, and only loaded minimally when relevant, letting Claude handle domain tasks—like producing formula-driven Excel sheets, brand-compliant PowerPoints, Word docs, and fillable PDFs—more reliably than token-only generation. Skills already appear in Claude apps and are visible in Claude’s chain-of-thought; users can create skills interactively with a built-in “skill-creator,” share them across Claude apps, Claude Code, and the API, and admins can enable organization-wide use for Teams and Enterprises. For developers, Skills are supported in the Messages API and a new /v1/skills endpoint for versioning and management; they require the Code Execution Tool beta to run securely. Skills can include executable code, be installed via an anthropics/skills marketplace or locally (~/.claude/skills), and be managed through the Claude Console or Agent SDK. Practical impacts include faster, reproducible workflows (e.g., automating multi-sheet finance reports and anomaly detection), deeper integration with platforms like Box and Canva, and easy sharing of institutional knowledge. Anthropic warns that Skills can execute code, so teams should only install trusted skills; improved creation and enterprise deployment tooling are coming.
