Waymo's Robotaxis Are Coming to London (www.wired.com)

Waymo announced plans to bring its robotaxi service to London, targeting a 2026 start as the UK moves to authorize limited autonomous vehicle pilot programs. The move—Waymo’s second venture outside the U.S. and potentially its first international commercial service—comes as the UK government accelerates a timeline to permit small numbers of robotaxis next year, then study their data for about a year before broader rollouts in late 2027. Waymo says it’s coordinating with regulators to secure permissions and will partner with fleet operator Moove to manage dispatch, maintenance and charging for an eventual electric vehicle fleet. Waymo will lean on recent international experience—testing in Tokyo since April alongside Nihon Kotsu and GO to collect local mapping and driving data—and on operational experience from five U.S. cities where it has given more than ten million paid rides since 2020.
