OpenAI has rolled out a ChatGPT app for Slack that embeds the chatbot in a sidebar so users can ask it to brainstorm, draft, troubleshoot, and — crucially — search and summarize Slack messages, files, threads and channels without leaving the workspace. Examples from OpenAI include condensing week-long channel discussions into concise overviews, generating one-page meeting briefs with action items, and catching users up on unread threads. The integration also improves search ergonomics (no need for the # symbol and fuzzy matching on channel names) and appears designed to surface context-aware answers drawn from a workspace’s conversations. The feature requires a paid Slack plan, a ChatGPT subscription (Plus, Pro, Business, or Enterprise/Edu), and administrator approval to install and grant the app permissions; non-admins must request install permission and then link their accounts. For teams this means faster knowledge retrieval and less context-switching, but also raises governance and security considerations since the bot will access channel and file content — organizations will need to manage permissions, data access policies and compliance accordingly.
