Meta’s AI translation remakes Reels in your language (www.techradar.com)

Meta has rolled out a Meta AI feature that automatically translates, dubs and lip-syncs Reels on Facebook and Instagram into English, Spanish, Hindi and Portuguese. The system can mimic a creator’s tone, cadence and voice in the target language and optionally align mouth movements for more realistic dubbing. Translated Reels are labeled “Translated with Meta AI,” and viewers can toggle translations on or off, disable lip-syncing, or revert to the original audio. The tool is free for Facebook creators with at least 1,000 followers and for all public Instagram accounts in countries where Meta AI is available. Technically this combines neural machine translation, voice cloning and visual lip‑movement matching to localize short-form video, making content consumable across linguistic boundaries without manual localization. For the AI/ML community it represents a step toward production-grade synthetic media at scale and gives Meta an edge in global short-video distribution—beyond captions/subtitles offered by rivals—while raising familiar concerns about authenticity, consent and misuse. Meta’s labeling and viewer controls mitigate some risks, but the rollout will test content-moderation, detection of synthetic voices, and cross-language quality (prosody, cultural nuance) as the feature expands.
