Meta has rolled out Vibes, a new short-form video feature inside the Meta AI mobile app in the US and UK that lets anyone make, edit, remix and share AI-generated or AI-enhanced clips. Users can upload a photo and have Meta create and animate a scene, upload and remix existing video with filters (background swaps, clown masks, anime effects), or generate a clip from a text prompt—then publish across Meta AI, Instagram, Facebook Stories and Reels. The app immediately surfaces a feed of other people’s Vibes and encourages remixing, making creation social and casual; signing in auto-links your Instagram ID for quick access. Technically, Vibes first generates a still image from your prompt and then animates it, a two-step pipeline that produces playful results fast but still shows “old-era” generative-video artifacts—weird limb geometry, hair behaving unrealistically, or missing body parts—compared with newer models like OpenAI’s Sora and Google’s Veo 3. It can also depict public figures “within reason,” raising authenticity and moderation considerations as mobile-first, democratized video generation spreads. Significance: Vibes accelerates AI video into mainstream social workflows, highlights divergent approaches among big players, and underscores both the creative potential and current fidelity/safety limits of on-device, consumer-facing video generation.
