Impact of AI Search Summaries on Website Traffic (arxiv.org)

A new study examines the impact of Google’s AI Overviews (AIO) on traffic to Wikipedia articles, revealing its significant influence on website visibility. The research utilized a difference-in-differences analysis to compare the monthly external-search referrals for English Wikipedia articles to those of the same articles in German and French, which did not yet have AIO implemented. The findings show that the introduction of AIO led to a reduction in traffic of approximately 5.45% for English articles, indicating that AI-generated answers can detract from traditional sources of information. This study is critical for the AI and machine learning community as it underscores the growing role of AI-driven search features in shaping online content distribution and user behavior. The findings suggest that digital intermediaries like search engines can significantly disrupt traffic patterns, impacting how informational publishers monetize their content.
