In response to the 2023 blockade of the U.S.-based open-source platform Hugging Face, Chinese tech firms are swiftly developing domestic alternatives to foster a self-sufficient AI ecosystem. Notable platforms like Alibaba’s ModelScope and OSChina’s MoArk now offer thousands of open models, aiming to fill the gap left by the blockade while maintaining compliance with Chinese regulations. ModelScope has introduced over 170,000 models, while MoArk provides around 20,000, though both still lag far behind Hugging Face, which boasts more than 3 million models.
