OpenAI launches apps inside of ChatGPT (techcrunch.com)

OpenAI announced at DevDay 2025 that it’s embedding third‑party apps directly inside ChatGPT and is releasing a preview of an Apps SDK so developers can start building integrations. From Monday users will be able to summon interactive apps from partners like Spotify, Figma, Coursera, Zillow and Canva right in a chat — for example “Figma, turn this sketch into a workable diagram” or “Coursera, can you teach me something about machine learning.” Unlike the separate GPT Store, these apps are surfaced inline in responses, can render fully interactive UIs (including pinned videos), trigger actions, and let logged‑in subscribers access account features without leaving ChatGPT. Technically the system is powered by OpenAI’s Model Context Protocol (MCP), which lets apps connect data sources to the model and participate in conversational context. The Apps SDK preview opens distribution and monetization paths (OpenAI plans to support purchases via Instant Checkout) while giving developers richer hooks for adaptive, personalized workflows. For the AI/ML community this accelerates platformization of LLMs — enabling tighter app‑model integration, new UX patterns for action‑oriented agents, and expanded data connectivity — but also raises practical questions around permissions, data governance and moderation as applications gain direct access to user conversations and accounts.
