The AI Genie Phenomenon and Three Types of AI Chatbot Addiction (arxiv.org)

A recent study delves into the addictive nature of generative AI chatbots, revealing the phenomenon termed the "AI Genie." This concept describes how users can effortlessly fulfill their desires through AI interactions, leading to patterns of use that resemble addiction. Through thematic analysis of 334 Reddit postings, researchers identified three distinct forms of AI chatbot addiction: Escapist Roleplay, Pseudosocial Companion, and Epistemic Rabbit Hole. The findings highlight that addiction symptoms align with traditional addiction literature and note the involvement of sexual content in many cases. The significance of this research lies in its potential to inform strategies aimed at prevention and intervention regarding AI chatbot addiction.
