Google’s robotics unit, Intrinsic, has announced the open-sourcing of its foundational infrastructure for intelligent robots at ROSCon 2026 in Toronto. This new offering, called Intrinsic Core, is released under the Apache 2.0 license and aims to democratize access to physical AI, a technology designed to enable robots to perceive, reason, and act in real-world environments. By providing a reusable software layer, Intrinsic seeks to simplify the complex development process for intelligent robotics, allowing developers to create custom solutions without starting from scratch. Intrinsic Core includes several key components, such as a hardware-agnostic real-time control framework, Pose Estimation capabilities for dynamic part handling, automated motion planning for collision avoidance, and adaptable grasp planning for various robotic grippers. It also offers simulation and calibration tools, facilitating easier integration of third-party hardware components. To further demonstrate its potential, Intrinsic has launched the Open Machine Tending Solution, a customizable reference design for automating CNC machining tasks aimed at helping smaller manufacturers adopt automation technologies. This initiative is expected to accelerate the growth of a more inclusive robotics ecosystem and enhance the adoption of physical AI across various industries.
