India's outsourcing industry is adapting and expanding in the face of artificial intelligence, according to a recent report from ING Bank NV. The country's software services exports have risen to 5.2% of GDP from 3.3% pre-pandemic, while business services—including finance, accounting, and engineering—have more than doubled their GDP share to 3.3%. This growth counters concerns that generative AI might jeopardize India's outsourcing dominance, which generates around $205 billion annually and supports approximately 5.8 million workers. ING economist Deepali Bhargava noted that rather than experiencing a decline, the industry is pivoting towards more complex tasks that AI is less likely to automate, such as analytics and software development. The demand for high-value services like risk management and research and development is surging, with India's digitally delivered services exports growing 45% since 2022. This trend illustrates that the AI landscape, rather than diminishing the outsourcing market, is reshaping it, leading to higher-value offerings and enabling India to capture greater market share in a competitive global environment.
