Bull Beats Out HPE for Next-Gen Lumi AI Supercomputer (www.nextplatform.com)

Bull has secured a contract to build the next-generation Lumi AI supercomputer at the Center for Scientific Computation (CSC) in Kajaani, Finland, surpassing HPE in the process. Funded by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, Lumi AI is set to enhance Europe's capabilities in both traditional HPC simulations and GenAI applications, with a strong focus on scientific research. The new supercomputer is expected to deliver a tenfold increase in AI performance and double the FP64 HPC performance compared to its predecessor, Lumi-G. The Lumi AI supercomputer will utilize AMD's Venice-Altair architecture, boasting over 317,000 cores and a peak performance of 1.43 exaflops. The infrastructure will streamline operations with a significant reduction in node count—estimated at around 1,240 nodes—while using advanced AI-optimized GPUs capable of handling lower precision tasks more efficiently. This project is not only a vital step for European AI infrastructure but also marks a commitment to developing competitive, frontier-level supercomputing capabilities within Europe. The Lumi AI factory will also incorporate a quantum computing element, reinforcing CSC's ambition to lead in next-gen computational technologies.
