A recent study investigating the impact of AI assistance on professional expertise in patent law has revealed significant findings. Conducted over three months with 133 patent lawyers at eleven U.S. law firms, this randomized controlled trial provided participants access to a custom AI drafting assistant. The results showed that overall work quality improved, particularly among junior lawyers within initial tasks. However, when evaluating their expertise without AI, only senior lawyers benefitted significantly. While the AI support enhanced initial drafting tasks, after three months, the performance of junior lawyers varied sharply—showing fewer mediocre scores but also an increase in poor outcomes, suggesting that foundational expertise is crucial for reaping long-term benefits from AI tools. This experiment holds vital implications for the AI/ML community, particularly in understanding how AI integration affects skill development in professional fields. It underscores that while AI can elevate performance in specific tasks, it may not necessarily cultivate lasting expertise, especially for less experienced professionals.
