Study: Generative AI Is Eroding the Development Pathway for Software Developers (eng.snu.ac.kr)

A new study led by Professor Taesup Moon from Seoul National University reveals that generative AI is not only diminishing job opportunities for junior software developers but is also undermining their professional development pathways. The research, based on interviews with 14 developers, highlights four structural changes: a shift towards "senior + AI" workflows, a loss of 'opportunities to fail' crucial for learning, and a significant mismatch in perceptions between junior and senior developers regarding AI's impact on skill development. As AI takes over fundamental tasks like coding and debugging, the hands-on experiences essential for junior developers to transition into senior roles are being eroded. This study is particularly significant for the AI/ML community as it underscores the broader implications of generative AI on workforce development, pointing out a critical gap: the diminishing practical experience that fosters expertise. With a notable decline in entry-level job postings—25% in the U.S. and 43% in Korea—the research advocates for institutional changes in education and hiring practices to ensure that new developers still receive the training necessary to cultivate their skills. The findings, to be presented at the upcoming AIES 2026 conference, call for strategies akin to those in high-risk industries, emphasizing the need to protect essential learning experiences from the risks posed by automation.
