Anthropic has introduced the Model Hardware Standard (MHS), a pivotal set of standardized drivers that enables AI agents to interface with and control a variety of physical devices. This innovation aims to streamline the typically tedious process of creating custom software integrations, allowing disparate components within scientific experiments to communicate over a common interface. By reducing setup times from weeks to potentially mere hours, MHS represents a significant leap for automated AI, enabling researchers to focus more on experimentation rather than technical hurdles. The initiative was inspired by neuroscience work at the HHMI Janelia Research Campus, where complex experiments required seamless coordination among numerous devices. The MHS not only permits direct command-line control of devices but, when integrated with AI models through the Model Context Protocol, allows researchers to interact using natural language.
