Developer Xusheng Li recently unveiled new functionalities within Microsoft’s Paint and Photos applications that incorporate invisible GUID watermarks in AI-generated content. These watermarks, intended to verify the involvement of AI in image creation, are part of a broader initiative by Microsoft to ensure content authenticity. Li’s exploration revealed that while visible watermarking is already employed, an additional function called WmkWriteWatermark is mandatory for embedding invisible markers. If this process fails, the entire image generation is halted, emphasizing the importance of watermarking in compliance with content provenance regulations. This development is significant for the AI/ML community as it aligns with emerging transparency requirements, such as those outlined in the EU AI Act, which calls for machine-readable marks on AI-generated content by 2026.
