MIT is set to enhance its campus security with an investment of over $3 million in more than 500 AI-powered surveillance cameras across various locations, including academic buildings and outdoor areas. The installation, which commenced in November 2025 and is expected to conclude by September 2026, aims to bolster safety through advanced features such as real-time face and object detection, motion tracking, and the ability to classify individuals based on clothing color, gender, and age. Data captured by these cameras will be retained for up to 30 days, unless specific exceptions apply. This initiative is significant for the AI/ML community as it showcases the practical application of deep learning algorithms in real-time surveillance, pushing the boundaries of existing security technology. The cameras, part of Hanwha’s Wisenet AI line, feature resolutions ranging from 2MP to 4K and include sophisticated capabilities for detecting loitering, crowds, face masks, and even potential camera tampering.
