Rethinking Legal Education in the AI Era (www.law.uchicago.edu)

The University of Chicago Law School has announced a comprehensive revamp of its legal education curriculum in response to the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, particularly following the launch of ChatGPT. Recognizing that AI is poised to significantly reshape legal practice, the Law School has developed a strategic vision focused on three key themes: fostering AI-resilient learning strategies, emphasizing essential human skills in law, and promoting the responsible use of AI. This approach aims to balance the incorporation of AI tools with the need for students to cultivate critical thinking and independent problem-solving abilities without over-relying on technology. To implement this vision, the Law School will introduce policies that affect core 1L courses, legal research and writing classes, and elective courses, with pilots beginning in the 2026–2027 academic year. Notably, there will be a ban on electronic devices during 1L classes to ensure deep engagement with the material and adherence to the Socratic method. The legal research and writing curriculum will focus on fostering proficiency in both independent writing and the effective use of AI tools, preparing students to navigate an AI-integrated legal landscape. This initiative is significant as it prepares future lawyers to thrive in an evolving profession while upholding rigorous legal education standards that respond to emerging technologies.
