UIUC AI Teaching Assistant (github.com)

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) has launched an AI Teaching Assistant on Hugging Face, designed to enhance learning in the ECE 120 introductory Electrical Engineering course. This innovative system operates 11 models concurrently, handling tasks such as text and image retrieval, generation, moderation, and response ranking, all while achieving a median response time of just two seconds. The training data, sourced from textbooks, lecture videos, and student forums, is selectively curated but not publicly available due to copyright restrictions. A notable aspect of the project is its unique approach to semantic search retrieval during Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), leveraging a custom dataset created by a team of Electrical Engineering students. Continuous evaluation is integral to the system's development; each new feature is assessed by comparing model-generated answers against expert-written ground truths, using GPT-3 for feedback. This open-source initiative allows users to adapt the AI for their own projects by integrating personal document databases, underscoring its potential for broader applications in educational technology and collaborative learning environments.
