Why we're moving off Cloudflare Durable Objects (usewire.io)

Wire has announced a significant shift from using Cloudflare Durable Objects to their own custom-built container runtime for managing AI knowledge stores, known as context containers. This move stems from inherent limitations in Cloudflare’s system, particularly concerning data retrieval processes, compute placement, and the need for self-hosting capabilities. By developing their runtime, Wire can now keep data processing more efficient and localized, reducing latency, and allowing for better integration of retrieval functions directly into their storage architecture. The implications for the AI/ML community are substantial, as Wire's benchmarks indicate retrieval gains have improved from 78.1% to 89.1%, largely due to enhanced architecture and a newer embedding model. This transition allows organizations to have dedicated resources, enhance performance, and customize their setups without dependency on external infrastructure, which is particularly advantageous for regulated teams.
