A recent report by KnowBe4 reveals that over half (55%) of UK employees are using unapproved AI tools at work, raising significant concerns about cybersecurity and data protection within organizations. Alarmingly, 10% of these users knowingly share sensitive company information with these unauthorized tools. While 58% of cybersecurity decision-makers recognize shadow AI as a major risk, only 16% believe their organizations are effectively managing safe AI usage. This disparity highlights a pressing gap in workplace AI governance and training. The report suggests that difficulties in providing adequate tools and the pressure to enhance productivity lead many workers to seek their own solutions, with 27% supplementing corporate AI offerings. As AI agents increasingly operate with minimal human oversight—around 19% reporting autonomous actions across workflows—the risks of deepfakes and phishing attacks escalate. The findings emphasize the urgent need for businesses to establish clear policies governing AI usage and to furnish employees with appropriate and effective tools, which could significantly mitigate the impact of shadow AI and enhance overall organizational security.
