The Widening Gap: The Benefits and Harms of Generative AI for Novice Programmers (arxiv.org)

A recent study has highlighted the dual impact of generative AI (GenAI) tools on novice programmers, revealing both benefits and significant challenges. Conducted through 21 lab sessions with participant observation and eye tracking, the research found that while most novice students successfully completed coding tasks using GenAI, there was a marked disparity in performance. Students who thrived were able to harness GenAI for guidance and effectively filter out unhelpful suggestions. Conversely, those who struggled continued to face metacognitive difficulties, which were exacerbated by their reliance on AI tools. Many of these struggling students ultimately left with an inflated sense of their coding abilities. This study is significant for the AI/ML community as it underscores the need for a more nuanced approach to integrating GenAI in educational settings. By illuminating how such tools can obscure the development of critical metacognitive skills, the findings urge educators to implement strategies that scaffold learning in ways that enhance understanding while utilizing AI. The proposed methods aim to support novices in overcoming cognitive biases and improving their programming skills, paving the way for future research on effective GenAI usage in education.
