AI systems out-persuade expert humans (arxiv.org)

Recent experiments have revealed that advanced AI systems can consistently out-persuade expert human persuaders, including professional canvassers and world championship debaters. In a study involving nearly 19,000 conversations, AI demonstrated its superiority in persuasion even when human participants had the advantage of selecting their topics, extensive preparation, and financial incentives. Notably, after receiving coaching tools designed to enhance their persuasive abilities, human experts were still unable to surpass AI’s effectiveness, indicating that AI's strength lies in rapidly deploying vast amounts of information in conversation. This finding is significant for the AI/ML community as it highlights the growing capabilities of conversational AI in social contexts, particularly in political communication and fundraising, where persuasion is crucial. Notably, AI was found to be nearly three times more effective than professional canvassers in raising donations for charitable causes. These results not only underscore the transformative potential of AI in communication strategies but also raise ethical questions regarding the deployment of such persuasive technologies in critical societal decisions.
