However, a significant challenge remains: the current telecommunications infrastructure lacks the quality and capacity necessary to support scalable AI operations. Despite the UK having extensive 4G coverage, it lags behind in 5G performance, ranking last in key metrics among high-income European nations. To successfully advance AI capabilities, the UK must prioritize building a robust, high-capacity network architecture. This entails establishing standalone 5G systems with ultra-low latency, deploying dense small cell networks to enhance service quality, and enhancing edge computing infrastructures to facilitate real-time applications. A shift toward shared network infrastructures is touted as a more efficient approach to bridge existing gaps, enabling quick deployment and investment where it is most needed. With strategic improvements in connectivity and infrastructure, the potential economic impact could be substantial, contributing an estimated £159 billion to the UK's economy by 2035. Thus, addressing these foundational infrastructure needs is critical for the UK to fulfill its ambitious AI vision.
