A recent study by Iowa State University’s Abram Anders and Emily Dux Speltz reveals that writing with AI necessitates more critical thinking and engagement from students rather than simplifying the writing process. Their research highlights that many students initially view AI as a shortcut, but the reality is that AI tools only handle surface-level writing, leaving essential tasks like idea formation and quality control in the hands of the writer. The study identified three key "threshold concepts": writing with AI is experimental, requires human expertise, and should augment human agency rather than replace it. As AI tools integrate further into academia and professional writing, the findings emphasize the need for students to develop a deeper understanding of writing as a cognitive process. Participants in the “AI and Writing” course reported becoming more reflective, intentional, and critical about their writing choices, learning to use AI not as a crutch but as a means to explore ideas and refine their arguments.
