Buy It in ChatGPT: Instant Checkout and the Agentic Commerce Protocol (openai.com)

OpenAI is rolling out "Instant Checkout" in ChatGPT and simultaneously open-sourcing the underlying Agentic Commerce Protocol, a co-developed standard with Stripe that aims to enable “agentic commerce” — where AI agents, users, and merchants complete purchases together inside chat. U.S. ChatGPT users (Free, Plus, Pro) can now buy single items from U.S. Etsy sellers directly in-chat, with more than a million Shopify merchants (Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx, Vuori) coming soon. Product results remain organic and unsponsored; users tap “Buy,” confirm shipping and payment, and ChatGPT passes the order to the merchant, which handles payment, fulfillment, and support. Merchants pay a small fee; users pay nothing extra. Technically, the Agentic Commerce Protocol standardizes the message and payment flows so merchants keep full control as merchant of record while AI agents mediate interactions. It’s built to work across platforms and processors: Stripe users can enable agentic payments in as little as one line of code, while others can integrate via Stripe’s Shared Payment Token API or the protocol’s Delegated Payments spec without switching processors. Security and privacy safeguards include explicit user confirmation, encrypted payment tokens scoped to amounts/merchants, and minimal data sharing. The launch is an early but significant step toward integrating discovery and seamless in-chat purchases at scale, lowering integration friction for merchants and creating a new channel for AI-driven commerce.
