A new survey of US CIOs shows Macs are rapidly moving beyond creative and developer desks to become first-class infrastructure for AI workloads: nearly three-quarters report using Macs for AI processing, Apple tech is considered important by almost all respondents, and 96% expect Mac investment to rise over the next 12–24 months. Organizations cited hardware performance, security/privacy and Apple silicon as the main drivers; 60% said Apple silicon strongly influenced their expansion. Use cases already outpacing traditional app development include build/test/deploy pipelines (61%), remote desktop (51%) and edge computing (46%), while 97% report using Mac infrastructure in the cloud, often extensively. For the AI/ML community this signals a possible platform shift. Apple silicon’s tight hardware–software stack and on‑chip ML accelerators make Macs attractive for private, cloud‑based AI where data governance and isolation matter. The trend will likely accelerate demand for macOS‑native ML runtimes and tooling (Metal/MPS and Apple Optimized frameworks) and for cloud providers offering Mac fleets, changing deployment and MLOps choices that have long favored CUDA/NVIDIA ecosystems. Teams should evaluate porting paths, performance tradeoffs and security gains when considering Macs as part of AI infrastructure rather than just endpoints for dev and creative work.
