OpenAI and Stripe are jointly maintaining the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), an open, draft specification that standardizes how buyers, AI agents, and businesses interact to complete purchases. ACP is built as an interaction model and machine-readable API spec so AI assistants can discover products, present offers, and orchestrate payments while merchants keep their existing commerce infrastructure. Early, production-ready implementations exist from both OpenAI (for ChatGPT and agent surfaces) and Stripe (for payment and merchant tooling), signaling rapid real-world adoption and reduced integration friction for developers and businesses. Technically, ACP is delivered as RFCs, OpenAPI (HTTP) specs, JSON Schemas, examples, and changelog entries in a public repo (agenticcommerce.dev). Key specs include a Checkout API and a Delegate Payment spec that enable agents to pass secure payment tokens and delegate payment flows without becoming the merchant of record. The repo also provides examples and contribution guidelines; changes must update schemas, examples, and the changelog. Licensed Apache 2.0, ACP standardizes “agentic” transactions, enabling embedded commerce inside AI apps, expanding reach for merchants, and creating new responsibilities around payment token handling, compliance, and UX for agent-driven purchases.
