OpenAI and Stripe create Agentic Commerce Protocol (www.agenticcommerce.dev)

OpenAI and Stripe announced the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), an open-source (Apache 2.0) specification that standardizes how AI agents and businesses coordinate checkout and payment. ACP lets any AI agent initiate purchases while businesses remain the merchant of record, retaining control over product selection, presentation, fulfillment, and acceptance logic (per agent, per transaction, or custom rules). OpenAI is the first AI platform to implement ACP with Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, and Stripe is the first payments service to support it via its Shared Payment Token. Technically, ACP defines agent-facing endpoints and integration patterns that plug into existing commerce backends and payment processors, enabling flexible commerce types (physical, digital, subscriptions, asynchronous). It securely passes payment credentials via tokens—so agents can complete transactions without exposing underlying payment details—and supports a variety of integration styles and discovery mechanisms. The protocol aims to move commerce from web pages into AI workflows, unlocking new sales channels while preserving merchant control and payment security; businesses and AI platforms can implement ACP to participate, and Stripe/OpenAI invite community contribution and broader platform adoption.
