Facing US chip curbs, China launches photonics lab to power AI with light (www.scmp.com)

In response to U.S. chip restrictions, China has inaugurated the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Integrated Photonic Computing Chips and Systems, the country's first platform blending industry and academia in photonic computing. Led by Zou Weiwen, a professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the lab aims to tackle significant scientific challenges in photonic computing, which utilizes light particles (photons) for data transmission, offering advantages over traditional semiconductor technology through increased bandwidth, reduced latency, and enhanced energy efficiency. As the demand for computing power surges due to advanced AI models, conventional silicon semiconductors are reaching their limits, prompting a need for innovative solutions. The Shanghai lab will focus on developing photonic chip architectures, integrating silicon-photonics, and creating the necessary algorithms and commercial applications to make these chips functional. This initiative is particularly significant for the AI/ML community, as it could pave the way for more powerful, efficient computing solutions, essential for meeting the growing computational demands of AI technologies.
