China has unveiled the world's first undersea data center powered entirely by offshore wind energy, officially commencing operations in May off the coast of Shanghai. Developed by a subsidiary of China Communications Construction, this innovative project addresses the surging energy needs of artificial intelligence while promoting greener infrastructure. The data center is strategically located about 10 kilometers offshore and boasts a planned capacity of 24 megawatts, sufficient to power around 20,000 homes. Its unique "direct offshore wind connection" model allows electricity from wind farms to be transmitted directly to submerged data modules, significantly reducing dependency on traditional grid systems. The significance of this project lies in its potential to redefine the energy consumption landscape for data centers, which are among the fastest-growing electricity consumers globally. By utilizing seawater for cooling through an advanced circulating heat exchange system, the undersea facility is expected to cut power used for cooling to just one-tenth of total consumption, saving an estimated 50 billion kilowatt-hours annually. This development not only promises to lower carbon emissions dramatically but also serves as a model for future AI infrastructure that combines renewable energy and optimized cooling, particularly in coastal areas where resources are limited.
