Updates to GitHub Copilot billing and plans (github.blog)

GitHub has announced a significant update to its Copilot billing system, launching usage-based billing for all users that takes effect from June 1. This new model incorporates GitHub AI Credits for both Copilot usage and code review, which will now also consume GitHub Actions minutes. Users will receive a specified amount of AI Credits each month according to their selected plan, with the option to set additional spending budgets once included credits are depleted. This change allows users to manage their expenditures more effectively while accommodating varied workloads. The introduction of user-level budget controls is particularly noteworthy for organizations and enterprises, enabling admins to set universal budgets or customize them for specific users. This ensures more precise tracking of AI credit consumption and enables proactive budget management through email notifications. Additionally, with the launch of Copilot Max, existing subscribers can access higher usage limits, making it ideal for developers engaged in more demanding projects. While new user sign-ups for various plans are currently paused, GitHub plans to reopen them soon, indicating a strategic effort to refine its offerings in a competitive AI development landscape.
