People are apparently farming citations on ResearchGate – Chuniversiteit (chuniversiteit.nl)

Recent research highlights a troubling trend in the academic community: the use of fake citations to artificially inflate citation counts on platforms like ResearchGate. A team of researchers uncovered a network of fictitious authors who have been linked to numerous LLM-generated papers, some of which are hosted on non-peer-reviewed sites. This phenomenon raises significant concerns, especially given that Ernst & Young and other reputable organizations have also been scrutinized for publishing reports laden with inaccuracies, undermining the reliability of critical data on which significant business and governmental decisions rely. The study revealed that over 22,000 accounts, including various fake authors, could be responsible for proliferating this academic misconduct. Many of these fraudulent papers lack legitimate attributes, such as proper author information or credible references, leading to their classification as "AI slop." The researchers identified patterns among these dubious citations, suggesting that some authors may exploit these fake publications to enhance their visibility and perceived impact in academia. This revelation not only exposes the vulnerabilities in current citation metrics but also emphasizes the urgent need for re-evaluating publication standards to preserve the integrity of scientific discourse.
