New research from Harmonic reveals that nearly two-thirds (64.5%) of activity on personal AI accounts is work-related, highlighting a significant trend of employees using personal tools for professional tasks. This crossover not only obscures visibility for companies but also raises security concerns, as sensitive company information may remain in personal AI histories after an employee departs. Interestingly, almost half (45.6%) of personal AI usage occurs on company-paid, licensed plans, demonstrating a blurred line between personal and enterprise AI usage. The findings emphasize a pressing need for companies to improve ease of access to approved tools, as cumbersome authentication processes drive employees toward more accessible personal options. While legal and governance teams exhibit the highest visibility with 81% of their AI usage on approved platforms, go-to-market and operations teams experience significantly less oversight, with only 39% and 18% respectively using enterprise tools. The report challenges organizations to consider more user-friendly solutions, such as universal single sign-on (SSO), and tailor tool availability to specific team workflows, ensuring better data management and security in an increasingly AI-driven workplace.
