Universal High Quality OCR and Book Translator (github.com)

A new automated pipeline combining Claude Code with vision capabilities has been developed to translate historical texts from Hebrew, Latin, and other languages into English. This significant advancement addresses a critical gap in the AI/ML community by enabling accessibility to landmark works in science and philosophy that have remained untranslated for centuries. By using Claude's ability to read scanned PDFs directly, the system eliminates the need for traditional OCR preprocessing and allows for seamless handling of complex manuscripts and diverse typefaces. The system processes documents in structured 4-page batches, employing specialized translation subagents capable of interpreting degraded historical scripts and even handwritten manuscripts. It ensures accuracy through detailed logging that tracks discrepancies, sequence integrity, and categorizes unresolved issues for human review. Beyond translating text, the pipeline is adept at rendering intricate diagrams, mathematical notations, and bilingual pages. This project not only paves the way for translating critical academic works but also sets the stage for future applications that can bridge language barriers in ancient texts, enhancing scholarly collaboration and knowledge dissemination.
