OpenAI has announced the acquisition of UK-based AI consultancy firm Tomoro to establish the OpenAI Deployment Company (DeployCo), backed by an initial investment of $4 billion. This new enterprise-focused arm aims to help businesses implement AI at scale, transitioning from experimentation to integration. As part of this initiative, Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) will be embedded within customer organizations to identify and optimize workflows where AI can significantly enhance operations. With this move, OpenAI underscores its commitment to the enterprise sector, where it currently derives 40% of its revenue. The deployment of FDEs is significant as it positions OpenAI to compete not only with fellow AI companies like Anthropic but also with established software giants such as Microsoft and Google. By leveraging the expertise of around 150 AI engineers and deployment specialists from Tomoro, DeployCo will facilitate large-scale transformations within enterprises.
