Microsoft has rolled out a new registry modification for Windows 11 that enables users to block the automatic download of large AI models by Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. These models, which can take up significant storage—around 4GB—were previously installed without user consent. The feature is particularly significant as it affords organizations and individual users greater control over the deployment of generative AI capabilities in their browsers. Administrators can easily configure this policy through Group Policy, Registry settings, or enterprise management tools without needing to restart the browser, enhancing the user experience. Through the "GenAILocalFoundationalModelSettings" policy, users can choose to either allow or prevent their browsers from automatically downloading foundational AI models for local use. Setting the policy to "Disallowed" actively stops these downloads and removes any pre-existing models. While this functionality is aimed at enterprise environments, it is accessible for general users running Windows 11 Pro. This step not only mirrors similar settings in Microsoft Edge but also applies to Chrome version 147 and onwards, emphasizing the growing need for user agency in the evolving landscape of AI/ML technologies.
