Google is intensifying its efforts to enhance the coding capabilities of its AI models by developing a competitor to Anthropic's Claude Code. This initiative, led by co-founder Sergey Brin, is a response to the escalating competition in the AI sector, particularly following Anthropic's recent advancements. Google has formed a specialized team, known as the strike team, aimed at evaluating and improving its Gemini AI models to better compete in the coding arena. Currently, Google's coding agents are responsible for only about 50% of the code they produce, highlighting the need for major enhancements to keep pace with Anthropic's fully AI-generated code. The significance of this effort lies in its potential to reshape Google's AI landscape, focusing on developing self-improving AI systems capable of comprehending user intent and autonomously writing software. While these improvements are intended for internal use and may not result in immediate public releases, they could lay the groundwork for future, publicly available models. This competition is further fueled by Anthropic’s rapid growth and evolving capabilities, which have shifted industry benchmarks for coding AI, prompting Google to escalate its development efforts to reclaim its leadership in the AI marketplace.
