Researchers from Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) in South Korea have developed an innovative AI-powered neckband that translates neck muscle and skin movements into speech, enabling "silent conversations." This breakthrough combines advanced pattern recognition with speech synthesis technology, allowing individuals, especially those who are unable to speak normally, to communicate without vocalizing. A small camera maps neck movements, translating them into predefined words with an impressive 85.8% accuracy under ideal conditions. This technology holds significant promise for various applications, such as aiding patients who have lost their voice, enabling discreet communication in noisy environments, and facilitating silent exchanges in settings like libraries and conferences. The neckband has successfully shown resilience against background noise and is more portable than existing thought-to-speech systems, like EEG-based technologies. Although current recognition is limited to 26 words—primarily the NATO phonetic alphabet—and accuracy drops during movement, continued training and development could enhance its functionality, paving the way for broader adoption and more effective communication solutions.
