A recent study from researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Oxford reveals concerning effects of AI assistance on human problem-solving abilities. Through experiments with over 1,200 participants, researchers found that while AI support enhances immediate performance in tasks like mathematical reasoning and reading comprehension, it simultaneously inhibits long-term learning by decreasing persistence. Participants who relied on AI for help were notably less likely to continue tackling problems independently after the AI was removed, suggesting that the instant answers provided by AI undermine the challenge of learning through persistence.
