Frugal AI for Education (www.col.org)

The Commonwealth of Learning (COL) has announced the advancement of "Frugal AI" in education, aiming to integrate artificial intelligence in a way that is inclusive, equitable, and regionally governed. This initiative emphasizes a value-driven, multilateral approach that aligns AI with open education as a public good. By focusing on capacity-building rather than replacing educators, Frugal AI seeks to empower local institutions and educators while managing costs and ensuring data sovereignty. Significantly, Frugal AI represents a shift from traditional cloud-based AI models to teacher-led, localized systems that prioritize efficiency and local ownership. It aims to mitigate the risks of dependency on external technologies, which can incur unpredictable costs and governance challenges. The initiative's framework, exemplified by the Gaborone Statement, is supported by a growing alliance of Commonwealth partners who are committed to teacher-centered digital innovation. At the upcoming India AI Impact Summit 2026, COL will encourage stakeholders to endorse the Gaborone to Delhi Compact, which promises a pathway for deploying open-source AI that respects national priorities and enhances local educational outcomes.
