AI is moving out from behind traditional screens: the argument laid out here (and reinforced by the recent ChatGPT Agent launch) is that conversational and agentic interfaces will increasingly become the primary — and sometimes sole — way people interact with digital services. Rather than enhancing GUIs, AI agents will run multi-step workflows in the background, surface only notifications or dashboards, and negotiate with other agents across products. That trajectory doesn’t kill UX; it shifts its center of gravity from crafting wireframes and visual affordances to orchestrating intent, governance and trust across distributed services. Practically, this means product teams must decide model exposure (chat vs. under-the-hood ranking), embed provenance and RAG-style step visibility, and build agent dashboards with task cards, costs, pause/resume and rollback controls. Design work becomes “agent choreography”: defining temperament, escalation paths, permissions, audit trails and cross-agent hand-offs (A2A-style protocols), plus guardrails like cost limits and sandbox modes. Onboarding must reframe user mental models at each capability jump, and design-ops must move faster as models evolve. The end result: fewer pixels, more policies — UX is no longer about panels but about orchestrated systems that keep people in control.
