A recent study from the Universities of Freiburg and Heidelberg has revealed that artificial intelligence (AI) can foster a sense of emotional intimacy in conversations, potentially even surpassing that of human interactions under specific conditions. Conducted by a team led by Prof. Dr. Markus Heinrichs and Dr. Tobias Kleinert, the research involved 492 participants engaging in personal and emotional discussions with either AI or human respondents. Notably, when participants were unaware they were conversing with an AI, they reported feeling closer to it than to humans, attributed to the AI's higher self-disclosure and openness during discussions. This finding holds significant implications for the AI/ML community, especially in fields like psychological support, counseling, and education, where AI could serve as a low-threshold conversational partner. However, the study also raises critical ethical concerns. The researchers stress the need for clear guidelines to ensure transparency and prevent potential misuse, as individuals might form unrecognized social bonds with AI systems. This dual potential of AI as both a beneficial support tool and a mechanism for emotional manipulation poses important questions about its role in our social landscapes.
