Hacking and Art: „Art alone is not enough" (netzpolitik.org)

Artist and hacker Helena Nikonole has ingeniously transformed surveillance cameras in Russia into tools for anti-war activism through her project ‘Antiwar AI.’ From 2022 to 2023, Nikonole hacked hundreds of cameras, using their built-in loudspeakers to broadcast a manifesto against Russia's war in Ukraine. This intervention turned everyday surveillance technology into a subversive communication medium, directly engaging citizens in their routine environments. At the 39th Chaos Communication Congress, Nikonole shared insights into her work at the intersection of art, activism, and technology, emphasizing that traditional art forms alone aren't sufficient in times of turmoil. Beyond her camera exploits, Nikonole is developing a wearable communication device that operates off-grid via a decentralized mesh network, enabling individuals in war zones or under oppressive regimes to communicate privately and securely without relying on conventional internet or cellular service. The device utilizes long-range radio technology, known as LoRa, allowing messages to be transmitted over significant distances. Notably, all components will be open source and designed for affordability, with plans to distribute them for free to activists and those in need. Through these efforts, Nikonole not only critiques surveillance and control but empowers individuals by reimagining and repurposing technology for social impact.
